ANERLEY METHODIST CHURCH

We are a small but thriving Church of approximately 50 members of all ages from a diverse ethnic background situated to the south of London in the Borough of Bromley, close to the boundary with Croydon. To find out where we are please click on the post-code above.

Methodism has existed on the current site since 1865 surviving the ravages of war, which destroyed the original Church and several peacetime fires all of which has necessitated extensive rebuilding. Fortunately these incidents, which seemed traumatic at the time, have produced an attractive and functional suite of premises that provide a flexible worship area and two well used halls all with access for the disabled.

For the most part, the spiritual life of the Church is focused on Sunday morning worship and a Junior Church that are well attended by both members and adherents. The difficulties of the Circuit in filling preaching appointments has led to a reduction in the number of evening services, some of which are now shared with our sister Church at Upper Norwood. Some of the Methodist Classes meet occasionally for devotional meetings and a Christian Action Group involving a small but dedicated group of people meets monthly. Some of the members have undertaken a Discipleship course whilst others participated in an Alpha Course in the spring of 2002.

The Church sponsors and supports a Scout Group that includes beavers, cubs and scouts, although the group's activities take place at a local school rather than on Church premises. The Church provides accommodation and financial support to the Penge Community Pre School that meets daily on our premises and provides much-needed Pre school facilities for the neighbourhood.

An essential part of the Church's mission is to make our premises available for community groups and activities. We hope that in doing so those participating in secular activities will feel an affinity to the Church and be drawn into the Christian community.

The range of activities taking place on the premises include use by a Pentecostal Church - The Salvation & Deliverance Ministry, the 'Jumoke' After School Club, a Wednesday night Church Social Club, a Dog Training School, the Anerley School of Ballet and Dance, Ladies Keep Fit, Martial-Arts and the Brightsparks Theatre & Dance Club. Church members are involved in a number of community related activities including the Penge Churches Housing Association, the Penge Council of Churches and local Scouting.
